Frequently asked questions about programming languages
Do I need a programming language on the server for an HTML website?
No. A website made of HTML, CSS and JavaScript consists of finished files that the server simply delivers – the JavaScript runs in your visitors’ browsers. This also applies to sites built with React, Vue or Astro. Any web hosting plan is enough, even the Micropaket. You only need Node.js if JavaScript is to run on the server, for example for your own API.
Which programming languages do your web hosting plans support?
All web hosting plans support PHP 7.4 to 8.x as well as Perl and CGI, with MySQL databases from the PowerPaket upwards. The BusinessPaket and BusinessPaket Pro add SSH access as well as Python, Node.js, Ruby and Ruby on Rails. For Java applications with Tomcat there are dedicated Java plans. This way you find the right environment for every common language.
Why do I need SSH access for Python, Node.js and Ruby?
Applications in Python, Node.js or Ruby usually consist of many dependencies that you install with pip, npm or Bundler. On top come database migrations, build steps and deployments via Git. You handle all of this conveniently on the command line. That is why our BusinessPaket and BusinessPaket Pro include SSH access, whereas the smaller plans do not.
Can I use several languages in one plan?
Yes. In the BusinessPaket and BusinessPaket Pro you can, for example, run a PHP website with WordPress, a Node.js API and a Python application side by side – each under its own domain or subdomain. The applications share databases, mailboxes and daily backups. Only Java applications with Tomcat run in dedicated Java plans.
Can I test the plans first?
Yes. You can test every web hosting plan free of charge and without obligation for one month. This lets you check calmly whether your application runs as intended in the chosen language. After the trial period you receive an email: if you want to continue, book the plan; otherwise it is deleted without any costs. One trial plan is possible per customer.
When is a managed vServer the better choice?
A managed vServer pays off when your application needs a lot of power, uses services such as Redis, workers or websockets on a large scale, or requires special versions and modules. You get guaranteed resources, and we take care of installation, updates and monitoring. All languages run there, also in combination.
