More power or your own environment?
If you need guaranteed resources or your own services such as Redis or Sidekiq, we run your Ruby or Node.js application on a managed vServer or in our VEP Cloud. If you want to manage the server yourself with full root access, a root vServer is the right choice. For Java applications with Tomcat there is our Java hosting.

Frequently asked questions about Ruby and Node.js
In which plans can I use Ruby and Node.js?
Ruby, Ruby on Rails and Node.js are included in the BusinessPaket and the BusinessPaket Pro. Both plans offer SSH access, which is needed for deployments, gems, npm packages and migrations. The Micropaket and PowerPaket support PHP, CGI and Perl, but no SSH access. You can switch to a Business plan at any time without data loss.
Can I test the plan for free first?
Yes. You can test the plan free of charge and without obligation for one month: click “Try free for 1 month” or tick the trial option in the order form. For Ruby and Rails, choose the BusinessPaket or BusinessPaket Pro, as only these include SSH access for Bundler and Rake. After the trial period you receive an email. If you want to continue, book the plan – your data and access details are kept. If you do not reply, the trial plan is deleted and there are no costs. One trial plan is possible per customer.
How do I run a Rails application?
Your Rails application runs with Phusion Passenger. You upload the code via Git or SSH, install the required gems with Bundler, set up the database and run the migrations. Passenger starts the application automatically and reloads it after a deployment. Our specialists are happy to support you personally with the initial setup.
How do I set up a Node.js application?
You activate Node.js in Plesk for your domain or subdomain. There you define the start script and the Node.js version and install the dependencies with npm. Via SSH you also work directly on the command line. This lets you run APIs, webhooks and real-time applications or build the frontend of your website.
Can I deploy via Git?
Yes. Via SSH access you clone and update your repository directly on the server, for example from GitLab, GitHub or our own Git hosting. Automatic deployments from a CI/CD pipeline are also possible. This way new versions of your application go online quickly and traceably, without uploading files manually.
What happens to my existing Ruby plan?
Existing Ruby plans continue to run unchanged; you do not need to do anything. We offer new Ruby and Node.js projects through the BusinessPaket and BusinessPaket Pro. If you would like to switch to one of the Business plans, for example for more storage or Node.js, contact us – we plan the switch together with you.
When do I need my own server?
A managed vServer pays off when your application needs a lot of computing power or memory or uses background services such as Redis, Sidekiq or websockets on a large scale. You then get guaranteed resources, and we take care of installation, updates and monitoring – without root access. If you want to manage the server yourself, choose a root vServer.
