Frequently asked questions about Jenkins servers
Jenkins or GitLab CI/CD?
Jenkins is very flexible and can be connected to almost any environment – ideal for existing build tools, SVN repositories or custom pipelines. If you use Git anyway, a GitLab server offers repositories and CI/CD in one tool. If you want to run build agents and applications as containers, Kubernetes on our VEP Cloud is another option. We are happy to discuss personally which solution suits your team. Ask for advice
Do I get root access?
No. The servers are managed servers: you work via SSH and in the Jenkins web interface, and we handle installation, updates and monitoring. This keeps the server secure and up to date. Because we take responsibility for secure operation, root access is not included. For you this means no effort for patches and maintenance, and more time for your projects. If you need additional software or a special configuration, our specialists set it up for you by arrangement.
Can you install additional applications?
Yes. We install and configure Jenkins plugins, build tools, Redmine or Jira by arrangement. This turns your server into a complete development and project environment, looked after by a single provider. It is important that the server has enough resources for all applications – we are happy to recommend the right size. What is the contract term?
The minimum term is 3 months. You order your Jenkins server conveniently via our order form, and we set up the server and Jenkins for you. All prices are monthly and include 19% VAT; alternatively you can pay yearly – you will find the yearly prices with each plan. If you have questions about the contract or the right server size, our specialists are happy to advise you personally.
Can I upgrade later?
Yes, you can move to a larger server at any time. If your team grows or the load increases, you can switch from VJEN150 to VJEN250, for example, and get more CPU cores, memory and NVMe storage. That way you start with the size you need today. For even higher requirements we run your server with high availability on our own VEP Cloud on request. Get in touch – we plan the switch together with you.
Where are the servers located?
In German data centres. LCube itself is certified to ISO/IEC 27001, and operation is GDPR compliant. Your server runs on brand-name hardware with unlimited traffic and is backed up daily. Our team is based in Germany too – when you have questions, you reach experienced specialists rather than a call centre. We have been providing hosting for businesses since 1995 and know what secure development and project environments require.
What is Jenkins?
A software project consists of many individual components, possibly from different developers. When it is time to prepare and compile the current state for delivery, this is usually done by one particular person.
Various problems usually arise here, because components that were developed independently over a long period cannot be combined with each other. Developers then have to step in again to ensure compatibility.
It would be easier if integration and compilation happened continuously – for example after every check-in, or limited to once or twice a day for extensive projects. Developers would notice immediately that action is needed, and preparing the project for delivery would be much more relaxed.
A Jenkins server can take over these tasks. Jenkins is an open-source continuous integration server. It handles this recurring task of building the project and is administered entirely through a web interface. Thanks to its plugin function the server can be adapted to your own needs – a large number of plugins is available, for example to integrate Jenkins into a Visual Studio environment and much more.
